NUTCRACKER BALLET RESOURCES!
One of my favorite December music class moments is exposing students to the Nutcracker Suite by Piotr Tchaikovsky, and the accompanying ballet. Every grade level was able to experience some of the music and ballet through various activities. Please check out some cool resources below, if you'd like to learn more! Also, Netflix now has the NY City Ballet's version of The Nutcracker available to watch for the season!
Welcome to Music land!
My name is Ms. Erin Garcia, and this will be my 7th year teaching at Herrington Elementary!
This is my 7th year in Round Rock ISD, and my 10th year teaching elementary music. I am so excited to meet all my new and returning students this year! :)
I am a singer and a pianist, and in my spare time I enjoy cooking, lifting weights, and practicing yoga and acroyoga.
I live in Austin with my daughter, Laurel, and my dog, Deco.
My favorite part about teaching is getting to know all of my students over the years, and seeing them progress as musicians! Herrington Hawks rock!

About the Curriculum
Our Music program is based on ensuring student success through inquiry based learning, performance experiences, and other activities that are both engaging as well as informative.
In the music curriculum, students will be given the opportunity to experience and make music, as well as express themselves through singing, playing music and learning basic musical literacy. Students will be taught to appreciate and analyze music, as well as how to simply enjoy it for music's sake!
What's the reason for having elementary music classes?
Music is a science -
It is exact, specific; and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor's full score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.
Music is mathematical - It is rhythmically based on the divisions of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.
Music is a foreign language - Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; and the notation is certainly not English--but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.
Music is history - Music usually reflects the environments and times of its creation, often even the country and.or racial feeling.
Music is a physical education -
It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lips, cheek, and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.
Music is all these things, but most of all ...
Music is ART - It allows a human being to take all these dry technically boring (but difficult) techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing that science cannot duplicate: humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will.
That is Why I Teach Music!
• Not because we expect you to major in music • Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life • Not so you can relax • Not so you can have fun • Not because we expect you to major in music
• BUT--so you will be human • So you will recognize beauty • So you will be sensitive • So you will have something to cling to • So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good--in short, more life. Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless we know how to live? That is Why I Teach Music!
