Some things that we work on in class are:
- Simple Rhythms & reinforcing the beat (through learning, playing, reading and writing). We study quarter notes and eighth notes, and quarter rest (ta & tadi) in first grade.
- Musical intervals & pitches using Kodaly-Curwen handsigns as well as reading and writing them on the music staff. First graders learn to distinguish between "sol" and "mi", an interval of a "skip" apart.
- Folk dances and games from around the world!
- Listening and/or Movement activities to a variety of music in different styles
- Solo & group singing of unison & rounds
- Learning about & playing instruments (xylophone/metallophone/glockenspiel, simple percussion instruments) to the steady beat and rhythm. We also begin practicing how to play in an ensemble setting.
